Ideas to Expand Your Workforce

by Susan Walsh, President and CEO, Sales-Link Inc.

There are many mature people with great advice and experience, and I want to find ways to encourage elders with interesting backgrounds and mentor-like attitudes to consider working with my company, because they bring value, and that means a lot these days.

Statistics show, that the year 2030 marks an important demographic turning point in U.S. history according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2017 National Population Projections. By 2030, all baby boomers will be older than age 65. This will expand the size of the older population so that 1 in every 5 residents will be “retirement” age.

From my view, I find that many people who retired from their career-jobs are still working some other job. (Some become Uber drivers because, from the small survey I did, many say their wives want them out of the house! LOL.) These people make for great conversations, i.e. tales about their kids, that bring tears to your eyes, because you see how proud they are. Many have had great careers, but while they wanted to, or were forced to retire, they weren’t ready to stop working all together.

There is so much history we create about ourselves living day to day. We do learn a lot, but not all is learned. Some things in life we choose. We choose to be certain people; we choose to care about certain things in life, regardless of what we learn. What you choose, is a piece of you, your values that you get to build into a story about yourself that is only yours to tell. And if we're lucky, we get to hear some of them.

I am very interested in asking seniors, who want to offer their advice, mentorship, friendship, and more, to join Sales-Link. We certainly can learn a lot, and don’t know it all. We are open to exploring opportunities to create outlets for elders who want to continue to exercise their minds and share their spirit for conversation and exploration.

We can learn to be better people and to have better experiences by hearing the stories of those who walk before us.
